Behind the Collection: Fall 2018

Take a deep dive into our brand-new fall collection with Alo's incredible design team

It's official: fall is in sight and our new collection's here to prove it! Now is the perfect time to wipe the slate clean and add some fresh Alo to your rotation. This season we're so excited about laced and contouring cutouts, super-comfy body-mapped seamless, luxe cottony layers and cool coverups for going to and from and so much more. Our head designers Mystika Jones and Sapna Von Sick and senior designer Michelle Yu gave us the full rundown on the collection, from the inspiration behind one of the most major new sets to their new go-tos for practice and beyond.

Walk us through the inspiration behind Fall 18!

Mystika Jones: We always design several capsules for the season. It makes it fun for the team to really get behind some of the major trends happening in ready-to-wear and streetwear. In a market full of performance product and sweat-absorbing synthetics, we wanted to go in a new direction with a cotton capsule collection—almost a cotton tech category. This is something I felt really strongly about after listening to yoga instructors' insights. Some of our cotton faves include the Delight Bra, Base Bra, Delicate Twisted Bra Tank, Choice Short Sleeve Top and Low Key Hoodie.

Sapna Von Sick: Natural change in the environment is at its best during fall! We were inspired by the beauty in the textures and layers that the season offers. This is showcased in our coveted Alosoft and translucent Arrow fabrications as well as the super-high-shine liquid styles. Creating shapes with lines through extremely delicate string lacing was also a focus.

The new High Lineset is really beautiful and striking. What was the design process behind it?

Michelle Yu: I was inspired by the intricacy of delicate spaghetti lacing, similar to how a corset is laced or how the Brooklyn Bridge is structured. The zig-zag lines really draw the eye to these pieces, but there's still an attention to form and fit.

There are so many cool new layers and silhouettes this season. How do you envision these playing into people’s fall wardrobes?

SV: The variety in silhouettes, lengths and proportions make styling these pieces effortless. Performance bras and tanks transition seamlessly out of the studio, layered under distressed pullovers or spongy mesh outerwear. There are so many options!

MJ: We have an amazing collection of après yoga pieces. They are easy to wear but also let you look put together. Not your average lounge pieces!

Any new, special treatments or details that set this collection apart?

MJ: My favorite part of the fall collection is our cotton technical line. These styles feel so amazing but also perform with you throughout your practice and layer great with our other technical pieces!

SV: Amazing new seamless styles in comfy silhouettes that make layering a breeze, our dimensional spongy mesh fabrication that adds volume and breathability and beautiful bungee strapping that moves the eye.

What's your favorite color from the collection?

SV: Henna!!! It's an elevated neutral that's effortlessly street and a must for fall.

MJ: It is so hard to chose! This palette was put together so carefully. My favorite combo is Olive and Jungle together. The mix of military greens is a new way of wearing our pieces.

What styles are you most excited about?

MJ: One of my favorite styles is the Togetherness Bra. It's a great fit for a more full-figured woman, which speaks to my soul, and there's an open back so there's no stress on your neck. It looks so great on. I also love the High Line Legging. It's very warm in most parts of the country right now, and this legging has open panels, so you can feel some relief when you wear it!

SV: I love the Base Bra. The super-soft fabrication paired with the perfect amount of coverage will make this style a wardrobe staple. The Siren Long Sleeve—beautiful mesh line engineering makes this an ideal piece for the studio as well as for layering under your favorite Alo outerwear! And the Delight Bralette—a wider chest band with a flattering neckline makes this piece so easy to style with the variety of cropped tops Alo has to offer.

What styles in particular transition seamlessly from studio to street?

SV: The new Air Land Ocean graphic legging nails the on-trend look for fall and can be easily styled with various pieces from the collection. The Precision Bra Tank has a high neckline that makes it easy to wear after class. The Pivot Layered Long Sleeve Top also transitions seamlessly because it has built-in performance and street appeal.

MJ: The Unite Bra Tank is one of the easiest transitional pieces. It has interior support and looks so great with any bottom you want to pair with it. It’s a true studio piece that you can practice in and feel good about wearing outside of class.
